Every koota examines a different layer of compatibility. Its weight reflects how much that layer matters to a lasting marriage.
Groups each moon sign into one of four varnas — Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya or Shudra — by its element. It reflects the couple's spiritual grounding and the balance of ego between them, checking that the natures complement rather than clash.
1 pointClassifies signs as human, quadruped, water-dwelling, wild or insect natured. It measures the natural magnetism between the two and the healthy give-and-take of influence — who draws whom, and how willingly.
2 pointsCounts the distance between the two birth stars in both directions. Certain resulting "taras" (Vipat, Pratyari, Vadha) are inauspicious. This koota speaks to the couple's shared fortune, longevity and general wellbeing.
3 pointsAssigns each star an animal yoni with a gender. It gauges physical and instinctive compatibility — intimacy and biological rapport. Naturally opposed animals (cat–rat, cow–tiger, and the like) score nothing here.
4 pointsCompares the planetary lords of the two moon signs and their friendship. This is the koota of the mind — affection, intellectual companionship, mutual respect and the ease of understanding one another.
5 pointsSorts stars into Deva (serene), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (fiery) temperaments. It measures behavioural compatibility and daily conduct. A Deva–Rakshasa pairing, being opposite in nature, scores the lowest.
6 pointsStudies the relative position of the two moon signs. Positions of 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 create Bhakoot Dosha, which can affect emotional bonding, finances and the growth of the family, and warrants a closer look.
7 pointsPlaces each star in one of three nadis — Aadi, Madhya or Antya — linked to the Ayurvedic constitution. Sharing the same nadi creates Nadi Dosha, the most weighted concern, touching the couple's health and children.
8 pointsOut of 36 gunas, tradition reads the total roughly as follows.
Falls under the traditional threshold. Marriage is generally not advised without a detailed horoscope review.
A workable match. The union can be considered, giving attention to the weaker kootas and any dosha.
A strong, harmonious alignment across most factors — considered highly favourable.
A rare and deeply auspicious match. Full 36-guna alignment is uncommon and highly prized.
Two kootas can override a high score. When present, tradition asks for a closer look rather than a simple tally.
Arises when both partners share the same Nadi. As the highest-weighted koota (8 points), it is considered the most significant — traditionally associated with the health of the couple and their progeny.
Cancellation (parihara): it may be nullified when the couple share the same rashi but different stars, the same star but different padas, and by other conditions an astrologer will verify.
Forms when the two moon signs sit in a 2/12 (Dwidwadasha), 5/9 (Navpancham) or 6/8 (Shadashtak) relationship. It can influence emotional closeness, prosperity and family welfare.
Cancellation (parihara): it is often waived when both signs share the same planetary lord, or when their lords are mutual friends — again, best confirmed by an astrologer.

For Guna Milan you need the birth star (nakshatra) and moon sign (rashi) of both the bride and the groom. If you know only the date, time and place of birth, an astrologer can determine the star and rashi from a horoscope first.
A total of 18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum for a match to be considered. Scores of 25 and above are regarded as very good, and 33 to 36 as excellent. Below 18 is generally not advised.
Not necessarily. Doshas can be cancelled, and a full horoscope weighs many factors beyond the 36 gunas. A low score is a signal to consult a qualified astrologer, not an automatic rejection.
